Pigmentation & Sun Damage Removal Cardiff
Do You Have Sun Damaged Skin?
How Does The Treatment Work?
Sun exposure over time can lead to uneven skin tone, dark patches, and visible pigmentation, which can affect the clarity of your complexion. These changes often develop gradually, but with the right treatment, they can be effectively reduced.
At LaserWise Clinic, we provide advanced pigmentation removal in Cardiff that clients rely on for safe, effective, and long-lasting results. Our treatments form part of a wider sun-damage treatment approach, helping to improve both pigmentation and overall skin quality. Am I Suitable For Pigmentation Removal?
Most people are suitable for treatment except for very dark-skinned or tanned individuals (skin types 4-6). This limitation is due to the laser targeting and destroying pigment in the skin; therefore, darker skin types will be at a very high risk of burning. Large, dark, mottled, or raised pigmentation cannot be treated, and it may need to be checked by a dermatologist first. Large, dark moles and lesions covering a large part of the body should not be treated. The pigmented marks that respond best are superficial lesions, such as those caused by sun damage, spots and freckles.
What Should I Expect After The Treatment?
The treated area may feel warm and sensitive for the first few days post treatment. The lesions may darken and may appear more obvious before they fade and ‘flake’ away. Sometimes an initial whitening of the area is seen which quickly fades and the pigment gradually fades over the following few weeks.

Are There Any Side Effects?
The skin that surrounds the pigmented lesion may become red or swollen immediately after treatment. Most people experience no other side effects and the redness usually disappears within hours to a few days. Very rarely a small blister may form or the skin may become temporarily lighter or darker.
How Is The Treatment Carried Out?
Your practitioner will begin with a detailed skin analysis to assess your concerns and determine the most suitable treatment approach. The area is then cleansed, and a cooling gel is applied. A handheld device delivers controlled pulses of light across the skin, targeting pigmentation while leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected. Protective eyewear is provided throughout the procedure. Most sessions take between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on the treatment area. For deeper or more stubborn pigmentation, a Q-Switch laser may be recommended. This technology delivers high-energy pulses that penetrate deeper into the skin, breaking down pigment more effectively in resistant areas.

An alternative to IPL is our Q-Switch laser, which is better suited to deeper, stubborn pigmentation. The short but high-energy pulses cause rapid heating, generating a shockwave that breaks down the pigment at a deeper level. This laser does not carry the same skin rejuvenating benefits as IPL; however, it has a strong success rate for patches that have not responded to surface-level treatment.
For hormonal pigmentation such as melasma or chloasma, laser treatment is not recommended, as it can worsen the condition. In these cases, we typically suggest alternatives such as skin peels.
How Many Treatments are Necessary?
The number of sessions required depends on the type, depth, and size of the pigmentation. In most cases, clients require between 1 and 3 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.
Some conditions may need additional sessions, particularly if the pigmentation is deeper or more persistent. During your consultation, we will provide a realistic treatment plan based on your individual skin assessment. For those looking to address multiple concerns, including fine lines and uneven texture, combining this treatment with our skin rejuvenation service can deliver more comprehensive results.
Consultation Procedure
Before any treatment, all clients undergo a free consultation to assess suitability and review medical history. A patch test is required before treatment to ensure your skin responds safely. Patch testing costs £50 and is fully redeemable against your treatment. If you are considering pigmentation/sun damage removal in Cardiff, our team will guide you through every step, ensuring a safe and personalised experience from consultation to results.
